Abstract

The Northern Ireland Transfusion Committee has produced this simple 4-step guidance on the investigation and management of the adult patient with anaemia which addresses the following forms of anaemia: microcytic, normocytic, iron-deficiency, macrocytic.  

  • Step 1 Full blood picture test  
  • Step 2 Iron studies, including ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT),  CRP  
  • Step 3 Correct anaemia,  Investigate cause if unknown (unless further investigation is not in the patient's best interests), Monitor response to replacement therapy  
  • Step 4 Treat disease causing the anaemia
