Hyperthyroidism affects more than one in 200 people. While the original RCP guidelines were influential in standardising treatment of the condition within the UK, these guidelines set out the latest recommendations for its management. Their scope has been widened to include the use of radioiodine to treat sporadic goitre; this treatment is now becoming established as a useful alternative to surgery for this condition.

The guidelines also cover recent changes in legislation relating to radioiodine administration and the effect of radioiodine on thyroid eye disease.
