This is discussion paper on the priority areas for NHS trusts to focus on improving the quality of inpatient experience, including interactions with health professionals and involvement in decisions. It urges NHS hospital trusts to use these domains, and the indicators that they include, as their priority areas for measuring and acting upon patient feedback. The paper is based on secondary analysis of over 72,000 patient responses to the national inpatient survey, 2008. This concludes that the core domains should be:

• Consistency and coordination of care
• Treatment with respect and dignity
• Involvement in decisions
• Doctors (confidence, trust and answering questions)
• Nurses (confidence, trust and answering questions)
• Cleanliness
• Pain control
