Abstract

Aims: To identify effective rehabilitation interventions in order to enhance the recovery process and minimise functional disability following stroke by providing a scientific evidence base for practice interventions and evaluations. This will help to provide a structured approach to stroke care and thereby reduce inequalities. Key points include:

  • early assessment and intervention are critical to optimise recovery and rehabilitation
  • secondary prevention is fundamental to preventing stroke recurrence
  • the patient's and patient carers' involvement is essential to rehabilitation
  • medical management of risk factors and comorbidities must be ongoing to ensure survival
