This report sets out steps to improve the physical health of adults with severe mental illness (SMI) across the NHS. There are major differences in the life expectancy of people with severe mental illness and these differences must be addressed urgently. The report highlights these differences and sets out clear recommendations for action.
It recommends establishing an expert group to set priorities and national standards, improve training standards and promote research in this important area. There are many other important recommendations, not least that there should be the same level of physical healthcare available to people with severe mental illness as is available to members of the general population.
