Abstract

This document describes the skills and competencies required as a primary care clinician, to make clinically-led commissioning a success in the community. These apply regardless of whether you are a GP partner, salaried GP, locum, GP specialty trainee, practice nurse, specialist or other healthcare professional engaging in the commissioning process in England.

It will also be relevant to clinicians engaging in commissioning in other UK nations, as all clinicians have a duty to contribute to the evaluation and development of patient services. Additionally, most clinicians in the UK will work collaboratively, whether formally or informally, with neighbouring practices and other healthcare providers.
