Capnography refers to the evaluation of carbon dioxide content in the respiratory gases of mechanically ventilated patients. Although the terms capnography/capnometry are sometimes considered synonymous, capnometry means only the measurement of carbon dioxide in respiratory gas (i.e. analysis alone), without a continuous written record or waveform. Capnographic waveforms may be time-based or volume-based.This guidance describes the capnographic procedure for the patient under mechanical ventilation.
