Abstract

This review focuses on pupils' perceptions of factors that impact positively or negatively on their motivation to learn in the classrom, that occur both in and out of the classroom, and are intrinsic or extrinsic to them as individuals. Six themes were identified from the studies as being key to motivation:

  • the role of self
  • utility
  • pedagogy
  • peer-group influences
  • learning
  • curriculum

The information is drawn from studies of pupils from Western and Eastern Europe, North America and Australia.
