A glaucoma repeat measurement scheme, in which the referring optometrist conducts the repeated test him/herself prior to referral or non-referral, was set up in 2005 for all patients who were registered with GPs in the Bexley area. The aim of the scheme was to enable optometrists/ophthalmic medical practitioners to refine their own referrals for suspected glaucoma before deciding whether or not a patient should be referred to a hospital eye service.
