Abstract

The inappropriate and overuse of unnecessary antibiotics is a contributing factor in the rise of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs), in particular those caused by Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium Difficile. Therefore antimicrobial stewardship programmes are necessary to help in the prevention and control of antimicrobial resistance.

This audit aims to determine the level of adherence to the Northern Ireland Regional Antibiotic Guidelines for first line empirical therapy in adults.
