This joint position statement from the Canadian Paediatric Society and American Academy of Pediatrics is intended for health care professionals caring for neonates (preterm to one month of age). It aims to:

  • emphasise that, despite increased awareness of the importance of pain prevention, neonates in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) are exposed to numerous painful minor procedures as part of daily routine care
  • present objective means of assessing neonatal pain
  • describe effective strategies to prevent and treat pain associated with routine minor procedures
  • review appropriate methods for the prevention and treatment of pain associated with surgery and other major procedures
