Abstract

This issue of Pain: Clinical Updates reviews current knowledge regarding the impact of acute pain and opioids on immune function. It emphasizes the role of NK cells, a subpopulation of lymphocytes that plays key roles in cell mediated immunity, the first line of immune defense. Without prior sensitization, NK cells recognize and kill a variety of virally infected or neoplastic cells and initiate protection against some bacterial pathogens.
