Diabetes UK has updated the position statement on the disposal of sharps.

In summary, sharps should never be disposed of in domestic waste or recycling. To enable people to dispose of sharps safely, disposal should be made as easy as possible:

  • Everyone with diabetes who uses sharps should have free access to a sharps collection service, which is convenient and free to use, and takes account of an individual's circumstances and preferences.
  • Local authorities should provide accurate and easy to locate information about local collection/ disposal arrangements for sharps on their website.
  • Healthcare professsionals should inform patients of local arrangements for sharps collection/ disposal.
