Abstract

Aims: This guidance addresses the prevention, recognition and management of the complications of gastrointestinal endoscopy. The document is divided into five sections: cardio-pulmonary and sedation-related complications; complications specific to diagnostic/therapeutic upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy; complications specific to diagnostic/therapeutic colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy; complications specific to endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography (ERCP); and complications of insertion of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies (PEG).
