Driving improvement: case studies from seven mental health trusts

Explores what it take to raise standards in a mental health trust, drawing on learnings from seven case studies. These are: Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust; Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust; Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust; South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust; North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust; Calderstones Partnership NHS Foundation Trust; and Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust. The report identifies the key enablers of change and improvement, which: leadership – broadening the leadership base, investing in leaders, and ability to listen and communicate; good governance – action plans and regular reporting on outcomes; culture – creating the environment in which staff do feel able to speak up and speak out; staff engagement and empowerment; involving patients and people who use services; outward looking – working with others in the local health and care system and voluntary sector, recognising that real and lasting improvement depends on organisations working together; and relationship with CQC - being able to speak to CQC staff between inspections was seen as helpful and an open relationship encouraged the sharing of concerns and discussions about solutions.
