Abstract

Developed by the Intercollegiate Committee for Standards for Children and Young People in Emergency Care Settings, this supplement is aimed at all healthcare professionals working in emergency care and provides five standards for the emergency care of children with complex or additional medical needs. Children with complex medical needs can present as an emergency with a complication of their condition or with childhood illness or injury. This presents a number of challenges in assessment and management and this documents addressses a number of issues to consider, including:

  • Emergency care plans
  • Who is with the child?
  • Privacy, dignity and communication
  • Systematic assessment and knowing what is usual for the child
  • Weight, drugs and nutrition
  • Safeguarding
  • Longer term follow up and care
  • End of life planning
