This policy statement from the American Heart Association / American Stroke Association aims to assist in the development and improvement of stroke systems of care in the emergency setting. Emergency medical services and the organisation of resources for the delivery of these services play a critical role in optimising stroke care. Recomendations fall within four catergories:

  • processes need to be in place to ensure rapid access to emergency medical services for acute stroke patients
  • protocols, tools and training should be in place that meet ASA / AHA guidelines for stroke care
  • training, assessment, treatment and transportation protocols for stroke patients should be developed
  • patients should be transported to the nearest stroke centre for evaluation and care, wherever there is one close enough for acute therapeutic interventions
