Schulman EA, Hohler A deP (2012) The American Academy of Neurology position statement on abuse and violence. Neurology 78: 433–435.
Consensus-based guidelines for the identification of intimate partner violence (IPV) have been adopted by numerous medical specialty organisations. The US Department of Health and Human Services has recommended that women be screened and counselled for domestic abuse.
The American Academy of Neurology endorses the assessment of abuse and neglect in patients and supports the education of the neurologic community to achieve this end. Additional research on the physiological and psychological consequences of abuse may lead to better treatment strategies to prevent related adverse health outcomes.
