The role of the independent visitor was first introduced as a statutory service for looked after children in the Children Act 1989. Since then, the service has had a relatively low profile with limited recognition and lack of understanding amongst professionals, children and young people. Independent visitor networks and key stakeholders have been calling for increased awareness and improved consistency across local authorities. In response to this call the Tudor Trust agreed to fund a three year project; The National Independent Visitor Network Development Project, launched in March 2014.
The aim of the standards is to outline a framework for a good independent visitor service.
