The aim of this short guide is to outline the principles in the management of blast and ballistic injuries. Whilst once the domain of the military, with the global rise in terrorism, particularly suicide bombers, it is likely that more civilian surgeons will be exposed to these wounds. Although the principles in the management of these injuries are similar to the management of civilian open fractures, some of the injuries, particularly the blast pelvis or traumatic amputations will be alien to most people. In addition the technique of amputations for trauma will not be familiar to most orthopaedic surgeons.
